The Basics of E911

  • Bright House Networks Home Phone Service fully supports Enhanced 911 (E911), and has since its introduction.
  • E911 service is active for all customers when Home Phone Service is installed and enables an emergency dispatcher to automatically identify your name, phone number and address when you dial 911.
  • Home Phone Service is not a powered line service, so in some instances, such as an extended power failure, E911 service will not be available.
  • When Bright House Networks experiences an outage, E911 service will not be available.
  • If Home Phone Service is disconnected, E911 will also be disconnected.
  • Moving your Home Phone Service modem to a new physical address without contacting Bright House Networks may result in emergency services going to the wrong address.

Questions and Answers

Q What is Enhanced 911? How is it different from basic 911?

911 is the official national emergency number in the United States and Canada. Dialing 911 quickly connects you to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) emergency dispatcher trained to route your call to local emergency medical, fire, and law enforcement agencies. Enhanced 911 (or E911) takes this one step further. E911 enables the dispatcher to automatically identify the phone number and address of the person who is calling.

Q Does Bright House Networks Home Phone Service provide access to 911?

Yes. Bright House Networks Home Phone Service provides customers with access to Enhanced 911 (E911). E911 provides customers’ names and addresses to emergency operators, which can save valuable time in an emergency.

Q Didn’t Bright House Networks support Enhanced 911 all along?

Yes. Bright House Networks Home Phone Service fully supported Enhanced 911 (E911) since its introduction.

Q How can I tell if my Home Phone Service has 911 service?

If you have dial tone and your physical address is the same location where your service was installed, calling 911 will work. DO NOT "test" 911! Calling 911 for this reason needlessly burdens the emergency response operators and system, possibly delaying response to a real emergency.

Q I moved my Home Phone Service modem to another cable outlet in my house. My Home Phone Service works; will 911 work?

Yes. As long as your modem is at the same physical address you supplied to Bright House Networks at installation, and it is connected to an active Bright House Networks cable outlet, you can access 911.

Q What if I can’t pay my bill? Will 911 work?

If an account is past due, our policy is to send a notification prior to turning off the service. If service is disconnected for any reason, Home Phone Service will not work, including calls to 911.

Q If my power is out, how long will I have access to 911?

As long as you have dial tone, you can access a 911 emergency operator.

Q Do I have to call Bright House Networks in order to move my Home Phone Service modem to a new service address?

Yes. Moving your Home Phone Service modem from the original service address without notifying us could result in emergency services being dispatched to the wrong location. Please contact us to move the modem to a new address.

Q How do I learn more about the FCC regulations?

Go to http://www.fcc.gov/ to read about the Federal Communications Commission and its regulation of interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable.
